Here’s a look at some local news brought to you by Silver City Radio.

The Freeport McMoRan Foundation has awarded nearly $2.8 million in funding to 39 projects in Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado through their Community Investment Fund process. Local leaders representing diverse fields and organizations along with Freeport McMoRan representatives meet and decide how funds will be awarded to benefit the community. Locally, the following grant recipients are as follows:

  • The City of Bayard Fire Rescue Unit
  • The National Center for Frontier Communities
  • Future Forge
  • New Mexico State University Silver City Business Sprint
  • Silver City Mainstreet
  • Silver City Recreation Center
  • Village of Santa Clara MainStreet Development

The Silver Consolidated School District is offering the “Test to Stay” program whereby students test for COVID-19 on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th day of quarantine. If the student remains negative, they can return to school for in-person learning. Parents are asked if their child has been exposed to a positive COVID case in the household, has come in contact with a person that has tested positive, or someone presents with COVID-19 symptoms in the household, to not send their child to school during this infectious period of the virus. The “Test to Stay” program is facilitated in the Silver Schools central office parking lot next to Fox Field from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Grant County’s AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are looking for a few friendly people who would like to join the group.  Volunteers do not need a history in accounting or tax preparation. Volunteers are also needed to help answer phone calls, setting appointments, or serve as an on-site greeter.  Training and equipment are supplied by the group, AARP. and the IRS.  For more information, please call  (575) 519-9463.
