Silver City Fire Chief Milo Lambert has been appointed interim town manager following a unanimous vote by council members present at a special meeting. Lambert, who has served with the Silver City Fire Department for nearly 19 years, became fire chief in 2017. He will oversee town management responsibilities while the town continues its search for a permanent manager, a process expected to extend into the coming months.

The Grant County Commission has approved a one-year moratorium on data center development and related infrastructure in unincorporated areas of the county. Commissioners approved the measure in a 4-1 vote to give officials time to study potential impacts on water resources, energy demand, air quality and surrounding communities, and develop regulations before additional projects move forward. The moratorium is scheduled to take effect November 21 and remain in place through November 2027.

According to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, a case of New World screwworm has been confirmed in a calf in Hidalgo County. The announcement was made October 23, as state and federal officials expand surveillance and fly-trapping to determine whether the parasite has spread to additional animals. Officials have established an infested zone with a minimum 12.4-mile radius around the affected animal’s location. Within the zone, livestock must be inspected and, if necessary, treated before being moved. Anyone who suspects an infestation should contact the New Mexico Livestock Board.
