In Gila National Forest news, at the time of this report today, the Black Fire located north of Black Canyon, west of Forest Road 150, and 24 miles north of Mimbres has covered 146,679 acres with 8% containment. The Black Fire is now being managed by Southwest Incident Management Team 5. Forest Road 150 is closed due to active fire. For the most current information on the Black Fire, call 575-249-1264. This is number staffed by a person from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M   Because the fire environment is so dynamic, please call this number and NOT your local ranger station. The New Mexico Department of Heath has issued a statement in recommending the use of a single booster dose for children aged 5 through 11 years, at least 5 months after completion of a primary series with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. It is further recommended that children ages 5-11 who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a booster at least 3 months after completion of a 3-dose primary series that is comprised of the following: a first dose followed 3 weeks later by a second dose and then for weeks by a third dose. This recommendation follows the announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s authorization of a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children last week.

In other medical news, the Early Childhood Education and Care Department has launched a platform for New Mexicans to crowdsource infant formula during nationwide shortages. According to a news release, the New Mexico Infant Formula Support Network is a new Facebook group that establishes a space for New Mexico parents and caregivers to crowdsource access to formula and other nutritional supports for their babies. The site also provides timely reports and updates regarding the nationwide shortage along with safety information and local resources available to families.
