In Gila National Forest news, as of 6:00 A.M. this morning, the Black Fire has covered 298,448 acres with 44% containment. Due to the Black wildfire, an additional road closure is in place. NM Highway 152 will be closed beginning today from mileposts 40 (Kingston) to milepost 15 (San Lorenzo). No entry will be allowed. It is hoped that it can be reopened in the next 2 to 3 days, as soon as the firefighters complete preparations along the roadside. According to a news release from the Gila National Forest, “the current weather pattern is increasing humidity levels, but lightning strikes and gusty winds are a concern. Yesterday, firefighters were pulled off the fire line for a while to take shelter from the lightning. Firefighters also responded to two new fires located near Emery Pass that were started by lightning strikes.”

In Luna County, due to the ongoing drought and severe fire danger, the current burn ban has been extended for an additional 30 days. The burn ban restricts any outdoor fires such as weed burning, cooking fires, and bonfires. In addition, with the 4th of July holiday coming soon, no stick-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, missile type rockets, ground audible devices, firecrackers and display fireworks are permitted. Residents may call the Luna County Fire Department for further information.
