Due to the Johnson Fire, located 3 miles west of the Gila Cliff Dwellings, the Gila National Forest has issued Forest Order 03-06-05-21-017 Johnson Fire Temporary Area Closure effective June 22nd at 12:00 A.M., to remain in effect until December 31st, 2021 or until rescinded, whichever comes first. The purpose of the temporary closure is to protect public health and safety during the Johnson Fire suppression activities. At the time of this report, the Johnson fire has reached 87,798 acres with 11% containment. The closures include:

  • Going into or being upon the Restricted Area
  • Being on the road
  • Being on the trail

Exemptions include persons with a written Forest Service authorization specifically exempting them from the effect of the Order and any Federal, State, local officer, or member of an organized recue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty. The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is not encompassed within the order and remains open to the public. The PNM Resources Foundation has announced that 20 New Mexico nonprofits will share a total of $215,000 in grant funding for community programs that support mental health or safety education for youth. According to a release, Funding ranged from $10,000 to $15,000 for each selected nonprofit to help combat troubling statistics such as New Mexico being 6th in the nation for teen suicide. The local nonprofit recipients of the PNM 2021 Community Safety Grant are Border Area Mental Health Services and El Refugio, Inc, both located in Silver City.

The Deming Senior Center is holding their Grand Re-opening on Thursday, July 1st at 11:45 A.M. There will be congregate meals for seniors from 12 Noon to 1:00 P.M. and limited activities. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance by calling the center located at 800 South Granite Street at 575-546-8823.
