The United States Forest Service is reporting today that the “Tadpole Fire” is approximately 6,793 acres at 30 % containment with 168 personnel working on the fire. New Mexico Highway 15 is closed from Mile Marker 10 through 25, that is from above Pinos Altos up to the junction of NM Hwy 15 and NM Hwy 35. The Gila National Forest has issued a closure order for the area encompassing the Tadpole Fire that will remain in effect until August 30th or until rescinded.

At the time of this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced 9,933 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases. There have been 271,553 tests performed statewide and current hospitalizations have gone down to 153. In addition, sadly there has been 447 COVID-19 related deaths recorded statewide. Positive COVID-19 cases in Grant County remain at 16 with 2,223 tests administered, Luna County increasing to 32 cases and 1,883 tests administered, Catron County remaining at 2 with 122 tests administered, and Hidalgo County rising to 23 confirmed cases and 681 tests administered.

In accordance with the Governor’s COVID-19 public health order prohibiting large gatherings, the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce, The Town of Silver City, Grant County government, and local schools, are organizing a Virtual Independence Day parade sponsored by PNM. Local organizations are encouraged to participate by creating a short video about their organization. The parade theme is “Salute to America: Coming Through with Flying Colors.” To enter the parade, organizations are asked to fill out an application by going to the Chamber’s web page at silvercity.org. Parade participants who need help developing their video clip will be given an appointment to meet with volunteers on June 26th at Silver High School. All parade entries will be combined for a streamed video, virtual, parade experience. Participation is free of charge and organized by the following categories:

  • School Groups
  • Sports Teams
  • Civic Groups
  • Veteran’s Groups
  • First Responders

The Virtual Parade will feature a welcome message from Silver City Mayor Ken Ladner, as well as a special tribute to first responders and members of the military and their families. In the evening, the Town of Silver City is promising a larger 1 ½ hour live fireworks show which will be simulcast with music on KNFT-FM 102.9 and KSCW-FK 92.9.
