Here’s a look at some local news brought to you by Silver City Radio.

Grant County held many celebrations over the weekend to honor the Independence Day weekend. The Silver City/Grant County Chamber of Commerce and PNM hosted the Independence Day Parade and Freedom Festival on Saturday that took place in Gough Park and Downtown Silver City. The parade theme was “Honoring Our Heroes” that focused on local veterans, health care workers, first responders and educators. The Silver City Museum held their traditional Ice Cream Social that also featured live music and activities for the kids. After the parade, hundreds gathered in Gough Park to stroll around many vendor and local organization display booths. The Kiwanis Club of Silver City held their 59th Annual Pancake Breakfast and BBQ Lunch fundraiser under the pavilion and served over 400 meals. Back in Downtown Silver City, Q’s Bistro and Little Toad Creek hosted live musical entertainment throughout the day and into the evening. Glenwood held community events on Saturday and Sunday that included a rodeo, parade, BBQ and dinner dance. Capping off the weekend, Grant County held a spectacular Community Fireworks display at dusk on Sunday night.

In an announcement made by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, the state of New Mexico will dramatically expand its Child Care Assistance Program that will double the eligibility for families from 200 percent of the federal poverty level to as much as 400 percent. In addition, the state announced that New Mexico has used a cutting-edge cost estimation model to set new childcare subsidy rates paid to providers, which is the first of its kind in the nation.

The New Mexico State College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences Selection Committee voted on the 2021 faculty and staff nominations that were submitted for distinguished awards. Grant County resident, Jessica Swapp Massengill, was awarded the Outstanding 4-H Agent Award for 2021. Jessica manages the local 4-H youth development program that provides opportunities for youth to acquire life skills and gain knowledge while having fun. Congratulations to Jessica Swapp Massengill for being recognized as an outstanding 4-H Agent!
