At the time of compiling this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced a total of 15,291 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases with 6,363 being deemed as recovered by the NMDOH. In addition, COVID-19 cases locally impacting the area include: Luna County has risen to 128 total cases; Grant County has risen to 35 total cases; Hidalgo County has risen to 74 total cases; and Catron County has remained at 3 total cases. A total of 424,355 COVID-19 tests have been performed statewide and currently there is a total 172 hospitalizations.

According to the U.S Forest Service, Gila National Forest at the time of compiling this report is confirming that the Cub Fire, located 3 miles northeast of Mogollon Baldy Lookout, is at 23,216 acres and remains at 5% contained. Today’s forecast calls for isolated to scattered thunderstorms for the fire and surrounding areas. Increased relative humidity values and cloud cover will slow fire growth and activity. The north end of the fire received light rain yesterday resulting in fire growth primarily to the south and west. Planned actions include continuing to prep Iron Creek Mesa and Whitewater-Baldy Trail.

The Silver City Public Library is resuming curbside pickup if library items starting tomorrow, July 15th. The library is closed to the public at this time due to COVID-19 health mandates. According to a release, the curbside service system is designed with the goal of reducing the risk of virus contagion. Checkout limits are reduced to 5 per person, 10 per household; and appointments are spaced out in intervals in order to make the service safer. The four steps that the public can utilize are as follows:

  • Reserve items by logging in to the library catalog, by email, or by phone.
  • Make an appointment Tuesday through Saturday
  • Utilize the pickup option at the at a clearly designated pick-up spot near the Cooper Street doors at the appointment time
  • Return books to the silver return bin outside the front doors of the library
