The Silver City Downtown Action and Planning Committee will meet Tuesday, September 8 to discuss downtown funding and visitor activity. The committee’s agenda also includes a report on the amount of Tax Increment Financing (TIF), funds being requested by the town, along with a fourth-quarter report from the Downtown Visitor Center. The committee will also take public input and consider unfinished and new business. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Town Hall Annex.
A debate over New Mexico’s seven-day firearm waiting period is drawing attention in Luna and Hidalgo counties. State Representative Jenifer Jones has joined fellow Republican lawmakers in calling on state officials to stop enforcing the waiting-period requirement. The request follows a federal court ruling last week that found New Mexico’s seven-day waiting-period law unconstitutional in a case involving two state residents. State officials have maintained that the waiting-period requirement remains in effect for most firearm purchasers, while the legal challenge continues. For residents and firearm dealers in Luna and Hidalgo counties, any change in enforcement could affect how firearm purchases are handled locally.
The Deming Luna County Senior Citizens Center is making changes to its operations following concerns involving its finances and leadership that put approximately $1.2 million in state and federal funding at risk. City and county officials worked with the center to address financial records and required documents for the New Mexico Area Agency on Aging. The center has since reorganized its board, and officials report that its financial records are now in order. The center continues to review its operations and leadership as it works to maintain services for seniors in Deming and throughout Luna County.
