The New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion’s (OBAE) Wireless Communication Device Policy Implementation Grant Program, a joint effort with the New Mexico Public Education Department, has awarded nearly $386,000 in grants to 33 schools and districts to help limit cellphone distractions and promote safe technology use during the school day. In Southwest New Mexico, Cobre Consolidated School District received $16,000, while Lordsburg Municipal Schools received $6,065.95. The funding will support measures such as cellphone lockers, lockable pouches and network controls to help schools enforce student device policies and keep students focused on classroom learning.

The program supports community projects that address local needs and provide lasting benefits. New Mexico is making progress in expanding high-speed internet access, with nearly 91% of the state now covered, according to the New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion. Since 2022, more than 120,000 additional homes and businesses have gained access through broadband projects supported by state and federal funding. In Southwest New Mexico, projects include new fiber connections in Sierra County and expanded service in Columbus, Silver City and Lordsburg. State officials project broadband access could reach 94% statewide by the end of 2026, with continued efforts focused on rural and underserved communities.
