The Gila National Forest is planning prescribed fire operations at the Sheridan slash disposal site off Sheridan Ridge Road, also known as Catron County Road 54, between August 3 and September 30, weather and fire conditions permitting. The prescribed slash pile burns are intended to reduce overgrown vegetation and help protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires. Smoke will be monitored to ensure compliance with New Mexico Environment Department Air Quality Bureau regulations.
The State Game Commission has purchased approximately 11,000 acres in Grant County to establish the Mimbres Ranch Wildlife Management Area, creating one of the largest wildlife management areas in southwest New Mexico. The property includes several miles of the Mimbres River, canyons, wildlife habitat and existing ranch infrastructure. The area is not expected to open to the public immediately, as officials develop a management plan focused on conservation, responsible recreation, wildlife protection and cultural preservation. The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One Deming Patrol has completed a safety upgrade at the intersection of Eighth Street and Florida Street. Crews installed new solar-powered, LED-enhanced stop signs at all four approaches to improve visibility and help drivers recognize the four-way stop, particularly during low-light conditions.
