The Golden Apple Foundation for Excellence in Teaching, a leading nonprofit committed to preparing, supporting, and mentoring aspiring teachers, is accepting applications for the New Mexico Scholars program through April 1st. According to a news release, “scholars will receive extensive classroom teaching experience, instruction from award-winning New Mexico educators, job placement assistance upon graduation from college, a stipend, and mentoring throughout their journey. The Scholars Program creates a new pipeline of great teachers to help address both the teacher shortage and supporting those to return to their communities to teach.” New Mexico residents who are high school seniors, freshmen, or sophomores in college, or enrolled in community college are eligible to apply now at goldenapple.org/scholars-new-mexico.

The Gila National Forest Wilderness Ranger District office located in Mimbres, will be closed for two weeks beginning today for office renovations. It is anticipated that regular office hours will resume on February 27th. Staff will be working from home or field locations during the office closure period. In addition, phone callers may leave voice messages and staff will retrieve and respond to them each day. Visitors in immediate need of maps, permits or information may contact the Silver City Ranger District office.

The Luna County Road Department is converting a currently existing 2-Way stop at the intersection of Country Club Road SE and Solana Road SE into a 4-Way stop with advanced warning signs to improve public safety. According to the Luna County Road Department, several accidents with high speed events have occurred in that area recently resulting in the need to implement stronger safety measures. The project should be completed no later than Monday, February 13th.
