The New Mexico Department of Health issued a COVID-19 update for Wednesday, December 15th consisting of 1,357 new cases statewide with a decreased 7-day positivity rate of 9.9% down from 10.6%. Locally, new COVID cases were reported as follows: Grant County with 28 new cases; Luna County with 22 new cases; Hidalgo County with 5 new cases; and Catron County with 1 new reported case.

In other COVID-19 local news, the Grant County Public Health Office, located at 2610 North Silver Street in Silver City is hosting a Drive-Thru COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic on Tuesday, December 21st from 9:00 A.M. to 12 P.M. and 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. They will be offering Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Schedule online at vaccine nm dot org or call the Grant County Public Health Office at 575-538-5318, extension 4.

The Silver City Town Council voted unanimously to appoint Lucien Farmer, as District 1 councilor to fill the vacant seat left by Cynthia Ann Bettison, who resigned in September for health reasons. Farmer is a senior geologist with Freeport McMoRan.

The PNM resources Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2021 “Reduce Your Use” grants that cumulatively provide more than $200,000 to nonprofit partners throughout New Mexico to help complete projects that reduce their energy use and lower their electric bills. Funded projects include efficient lighting, solar panel installations, updating heating and cooling systems, window coverings, ceiling fans, and energy saving appliances. The local “Reduce Your Use” recipients are: Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Inc.; Luna County Historical Society; Transforming Luna County; El Grito, Inc. and El Refugio, Inc., both in Silver City.
