At the time of compiling this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced a total of 22,643 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases. In addition, COVID-19 cases locally impacting the area are as follows: Grant County remains at 71 total cases with 28 recovered; Luna County rose to 254 total cases with an increase of 75 recovered; Hidalgo County remaining at 90 total cases with an increase of 35 recovered; and Catron County at 5 total cases. Statewide, it has risen to 134 individuals currently hospitalized and 9,612 individuals designated as totally recovered.

The Silver City Ranger District, Gila National Forest has recently installed two roll-over cattleguards at Fort Bayard near the Badlands Corral. According to a release, “the roll-over cattleguard system will eliminate the need for bike riders to constantly get off their bikes to deal with gates.” In addition, the system will help livestock remain where they belong since recreational visitors will not be leaving gates open as have happened in the past. At the Badland corrals, two of the three gates have been replaced with the new cattleguard system. Forest Service employees, Naomi Gomez and Brian Martinez, are credited for the research, purchase and coordination of the new gate installation.

The Town of Silver City is seeking input from Silver City residents on public projects sought for the town of Silver City and the Silver City Senior Center Infrastructure and Capital Improvement Plan. The plan establishes priorities for anticipated capital projects in addition to policy direction, funding time frames, estimated costs, justifications, and the details of each specific infrastructure capital improvement project proposed, by year, for a 5-year period. The town will only be seeking public comment in written form due to COVID-19 safe practices. Individuals are urged to submit written comments by August 25th.
