Yesterday, a new wildfire started on the Gila National Forest in the Reserve Ranger District during the mid-day hours. According to a news release at the time of this report, the “Collins Fire” is roughly 17 miles southeast of Reserve and encompasses approximately 1,000 acres. In addition, at least 50 personnel are working to contain the fire including a hotshot crew, three engines, two airtankers, one fixed-wing airplane and one wildfire module consisting of 10 firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation and multiple structures are threatened.

The 80th Anniversary of the World War II’s Bataan Death March will be recognized locally with special events that honor the over 60,000 to 80,000  captured U.S soldiers and Filipino freedom fighters in 1942 that were forced to march over 60 miles by the Japanese Imperial Army. Tomorrow, there is a rededication of Bataan Memorial Park in Fort Bayard. The event begins with a 3.5 mile walk beginning at 10:00 A.M., a Hero Parade at 12:30 P.M. and a rededication ceremony at 1:00 P.M. The event focuses a remembrance and honor of local heroes of the 200th and 515th Coast Artillery. In Deming, fifth graders from Bataan Elementary School will honor Luna County and New Mexico veterans by hosting a tribute on Monday, April 11th at 10:00 A.M. The Gaffney-Oglesby Marine Corps Honor Guard from Silver City will present colors at the event and students will deliver a “roll call” during the playing of Taps. In addition, veterans and family members of veterans who served in the 200th and 515th regiments along with parents of the fifth graders are invited to the event as special guests.

Silver City Mayor, Ken Ladner, is hosting a “Monday Meeting with the Mayor” this coming Monday, April 11th from 8:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the Javalina Coffee House in Downtown Silver City. The Mayor invited the public to share their input, ideas, and inspirations toward making the Town event better than it already is. In addition, participants can enjoy a soda or cup of coffee compliments of Mayor Ladner.
