Here’s a look at some local news brought to you by Silver City Radio.

On Friday at approximately 4:07 P.M., 45 firefighters from the Gila National Forest responded to the East Fire located south of Hicks Cemetery near the Town of Mimbres and Highway 35. As reported in an incident overview, the fire initially started on private land but moved into the jurisdictional forest boundary. At the time of this report, the fire covered 100 acres and firefighters from multiple resources continued to construct containment lines and mop up procedures. In addition, four homes were threatened as the fire spread up East Canyon.

During the monthly Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce Luncheon, Bruce Ashburn of PNM, awarded honors to local businesses for their efforts in saving energy. The awards were given to The Food Mart (owned by W&N Enterprises), Western New Mexico University, Cobre Consolidated Schools, and the County of Grant. Each award recognized the thousands of kilowatt hours saved by their efforts that in turn will save enough energy to power homes, prevent tons of carbon into the atmosphere, and save hundred of thousands of gallons of water.

Aldo Leopold Charter School is hosting an evening of Community Internship and Youth Conservation Corp member presentations, showcasing the efforts of ALCS youth in the community. In addition, individuals will learn about the summer job opportunities for 86 area youth running May 23rd through June 10th. The openings are available in the YCC trail, mural, garden, and eco-monitoring crews. This event takes place on May 4th at 5 PM in Ritch Hall on the WNMU campus, located at 410 West 10th Street. Students will be able to pick up application materials and meet with the Internship/YCC coordinator.
