Here’s a look at today’s news:

The Silver Consolidated School Board has approved the hiring and placing of 3 armed guards in district schools for the 2018-19 school year. School Superintendent, Audie Brown stated that candidates will most likely be retired law enforcement and that the salaries will be obtained through the district’s operating budget. Director of Maintenance, Barry Ward, reported that school cameras and electronic locks have been ordered for all Silver Schools at a cost of $25,000.00.

The 2nd Annual Fiesta Latina kicked off today at Old James Stadium on the Western New Mexico University Campus located 1000 West College Avenue in Silver City. The event has been expanded to 3 days and includes an Artisan Mercado, Documentary Film Series, a Tree of Life Workshop, Food Court, Children’s Activities, Live Music, Tequila Tasting, and much more. The Artisan Mercado begins at 10:00 am and finishes at 6:00 pm tonight and Saturday and 10:00 A.M. am to 2:00 P.M on Sunday. The Ranch Fire was reported at approximately 3:15 p.m. yesterday in the Reserve Ranger District and is believed to have originated north of Saliz Pass near Glenwood. The fire is approximately 300-400 acres and is now on the west side of US Hwy 180. The Navopache power line was impacted resulting in a power outage in Glenwood. Crews were successful with anchoring the east side up to US Hwy 180. There is a night-time firing operation along US Hwy 180 towards Cottonwood Canyon. Values at risk include the TEP and Navopache power lines, and a structure protection of private lands on the US Hwy 180 corridor. US Highway 180 is not closed. There are warning signs that there is a fire ahead, and that there may be extended delays, travelers could be asked to turn around, or wait to be piloted between mile posts 25-32 where burnout operations are taking place.

The Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce will be presenting “The Best of the Kingdom of the Sun” awards at their meeting tonight at the St. Claire Winery in Deming. The awards are a result of a public nomination process including online public polls. These awards are a revamped version of the Community Achievement Awards that were historically presented at the January Annual Gala. The meeting tonight is from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the St. Claire Winery, located at 1325 DeBaca Road S.E, and all chamber members and nominees are encouraged to attend.
