Here’s a look at some local news:

The construction of the Mountain View Senior Living facility, located at the site of the old Hillcrest General Hospital of Silver City, is now well underway. A study was conducted regarding the availability of affordable senior living in Silver City, and Bethel Development company responded by creating the rental housing project that will offer one and two- bedroom units. The project is not an assisted or gradual living facility, but an affordable living space for seniors. It is anticipated that construction will be completed in February of 2019 and the first units will be ready in March. The Bethel company has built and operated the Silver Cliff Apartments located near the Mountain View site.

Officials from Deming High School are distributing class schedules and student laptops this week during assigned days from 8:30 to 12 Noon and 1:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.  The dates and grades are as follows: students entering 10th grade are scheduled for tomorrow, August 1st; 9th graders for this Thursday, August 2nd; 11th graders for this Friday, August 3rd; and seniors for Monday, August 6th. Students that can’t attend on their assigned day, will be able to take advantage of a make-up day scheduled for Tuesday, August 7th from 8:30 A.M. to 12 noon only. Freshman orientation has been will be held on Thursday, August 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the new Deming High School gymnasium.

The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District is hosting discussions on proposed road decommissioning in the Burro Mountains. This project includes looking at the roads that have already been closed in the Burro Mountains, as candidates for decommissioning to restore vegetation, reduce erosion and change the appearance of the road on the landscape. In addition, the District is asking for feedback on two specific transportation system items that have received numerous public comments. The area affected include the Burro Mountains ATV trails that were designated for vehicles 50” or less, and access within the Bear Creek area northwest of Pinos Altos. The Silver City Ranger District will be hosting a facilitated meeting to discuss these topics on August 7th from 5:30-7:30 in the Tyrone Property Owners Association hall at 50 Malachite Street, behind the Tyrone Post Office. The meeting will include a short presentation starting at 5:30 followed by table discussions with project team members and forest staff using large format maps. In addition, there are designated office hours scheduled for August 8th and 9th from 4:00-5:30 PO.M. at the Gila National Forest Supervisor’s Office located at 3005 E.
