The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish has set up bear traps in Grant County attributed to several reports of bear sightings in the area. Since the beginning of the month there have been reported incidents, actual bear sightings or tracks reported in Hanover, Pinos Altos, Signal Peak and the Little Walnut area in Silver City. The dry conditions have forced prey animals such as deer to move to lower levels in search of food and water. The larger predators then follow the prey animals looking for food and water as well. When encountering a bear, residents are encouraged to call central dispatch.
