Here’s a look at today’s headlines:

Yesterday, a bill to prevent telemarketers from calling personal cell phones passed the New Mexico House Floor with a unanimous vote. House Bill 424, would update the language in the Telephone Sales Solicitation section of the Unfair Practices Act to reflect the growing use of cell phones. House Bill 424 would replace “residential subscriber” with “person” and “releases the line” with “discontinue the call.” The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.

The search is on for the next Silver City area’s “Poet Laureate”. The position is honorary and according to a release, “is awarded to a person who has established a presence in the world of poetry, has demonstrated a commitment to the literary art form, and who embraces the opportunity to engage in civil discourse.”  The duties of the Poet Laureate are to promote poetry in the community and may present an original commemorative poem at public events as determined by the Southwest Festival of the Written Word and/or the Silver City Town Council. The Luna Board of County Commissioners is holding a Special Meeting tomorrow at 2:00 P.M. at the 3rd floor Commission Chambers of the Luna County Courthouse, located at 700 South Silver Avenue in Deming. Topics will include the County Manager’s interviews and selection process in addition to the Interim County Manager position and transition. There will also be closed Executive session.

The Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest in Grant County held their annual “Thinking Day” Event at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Silver City. Girls gathered from different troops and created displays of countries and learned, and prepared and tasted foods from China, Greece, France, and the United States (particularly New Mexico). Promoted by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts along with Girl Scouts of the USA, “World Thinking Day” originated in 1926 for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides to join together and take part in activities that promote changing the world for the better.
