Here’s a look at today’s local news:

Local Girl Scout Troop 54370 made 20 food baskets that were given to students in the Cobre School District where the girls attend school. The donations were obtained by Walmart customers, Jerky Store & More, Los Vatos RC, Garcia Fence, First American Bank, Speedwrench Garage, Enclave, Terrazas Funeral Chapels, Hurley Fire Department, Southwest Bone & Joint, Mi Ranchito, Cobre High School Office Staff, and the McBride family. The project is a part of the girl scouts earning their Silver Award, the highest honor a Cadette can achieve. They choose an issue they care about, learn the facts, and take action to make a difference while gaining the confidence and skills that will catapult them to lifelong success.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation will be hosting free car seat inspection clinics and fitting stations throughout the state in the coming 2020 year. In a news release issued by the NMDOT, this free educational event provides parents and caregivers the opportunity to receive hands-on instruction from nationally-certified child passenger safety technicians. Technicians will educate parents on the proper selection, installation and use of car seats and booster seats. In addition, they will determine if a seat is recalled, expired or otherwise unsafe. Fitting stations offer appointments during regular hours of operation at 11 permanent locations, including Deming on Wednesday, January 8 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Deming Fire Department, located at 309 South Gold Street. For more information or to make an appointment, please call (800) 231-6145.
