Here’s a look at today’s headlines:

In Deming, students from Red Mountain Middle School performed traditional ballet folklorico for residents and staff of the Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home this week.  The dance class is taught by Raquel Calles, who also teaches ESL, (English as a Second Language) for seventh and eighth graders at Red Mountain Middle School. The students have been practicing after school for two days a week and were very excited to share their talents with others in the community. Thank you to Raquel Calles and ballet folkorico dancers for sharing joy with others this holiday season!

The Silver City Police Department has responded to two residential burglaries this week. The first one was reported on December 20th at 11:58 A.M. in the 500 block of 33rd Street. The suspect(s) entered the home and stole Christmas presents that were laid out under the tree. The second incident was reported at 5:46 P.M. in the 1400 block of Louisiana Street where a drum set and other items were stolen. An investigation is in process for both burglaries. The Silver City Police Department is asking citizens keep a watch out in your neighborhoods for any suspicious activity and report it immediately to the dispatch center at (575) 388-8840. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Silver City Police Department Investigations Bureau at 575-538-3723.

Candidate packets are ready for the Town of Silver City Regular Municipal Election to be held on Tuesday, March 6th, for the elective offices of Mayor, Councilor District 2, Councilor District 4, and Municipal Judge. Packets are available online at townofsilvercity.org. Declaration of candidacy is Tuesday, January 9th, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ONLY in the office of the Municipal Clerk, City Hall located at 101 West Broadway. In addition, precinct workers are needed for this election. These are paid positions to work at the polls on Election Day from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or later on Election Day. Anyone interested in applying as a precinct worker should contact Ann Mackie, Town Clerk, at City Hall, at townclerk@silvercitynm.gov.
