A ceremony was held earlier today in Silver City for Cornerstone Apartments, a 30-unit affordable housing development designed to assist individuals transitioning out of homelessness. The project will provide affordable housing, rental assistance and on-site supportive services, along with community amenities to help residents achieve long-term stability. The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions’ Office of Housing invested $3 million to keep the project moving forward after an unexpected federal grant termination threatened its completion, preserving years of planning and development work.
Harrison Schmitt Elementary School welcomed its second Moon Tree during a planting ceremony this week, a Douglas fir grown from a seed that traveled around the Moon aboard NASA’s Artemis I mission in 2022. During the ceremony, representatives of the Gila National Forest highlighted the achievements of the school’s namesake, astronaut Harrison Schmitt, a Santa Rita native who walked on the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. With the addition of the Artemis Moon Tree, Silver City now has trees representing both the Apollo and Artemis missions, a distinction shared by only a handful of communities across the country.
