The Village of Santa Clara is urging residents to take precautions following a recent bear sighting within village limits. Residents are encouraged to remain alert, keep a safe distance from wildlife and secure potential food sources, including garbage, pet food, birdseed and outdoor grills. If a bear is encountered, officials advise residents not to run, but to remain calm, make themselves appear larger and slowly back away toward safety. Anyone who spots a bear is asked to report the sighting to Central Dispatch.

DAGSHIP Rescue in Deming has announced that they have received a donated van to expand its animal transportation efforts throughout southwestern New Mexico. An anonymous donor provided the nonprofit with a used vehicle, along with an extended warranty and one year of insurance coverage. The van will allow volunteers to transport multiple animals more efficiently to veterinary appointments, surgical procedures and other rescue organizations. The vehicle is expected to be especially helpful when taking shelter animals to Arenas Valley Veterinary Clinic for medical procedures.
