Happy 4th of July!

The Gila National Forest is hosting “Coffee with Camille” on July 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Reserve Ranger District office. This event is to give the public an opportunity to meet with the Gila National Forest supervisor and staff members to discuss topics that are of interest or concern to them. The New Mexico Public Education Department has named Bell Elementary School in Deming as a Structured Literacy Model School. The school and their teachers were recognized for their hard work and the structured approaches they take to help students learn to read and write proficiently. Bell Elementary is set to receive $50,000 which will go to purchase learning materials for students and teachers to use for the upcoming school year. 

Immunization clinics will be available all around New Mexico providing free shots to students from July 8th through August 31st to get them ready for the new school year. Congratulations to the Silver City High Schools Track and Field Team who recently competed in the USATF New Mexico State Junior Track and Field Championship where 6 students from the team qualified to compete in the state regionals this weekend. Students Kai Casler, Austin Paquette, Logan Wood, Kaleb Paquette, Coy Theobald and Alexys Salas will be competing against some of the best teams from Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and West Texas. The New Mexico Farmers’ Marketing Association, a statewide nonprofit dedicated to helping agriculture producers, has officially begun the “SNAP Double Up Food Bucks New Mexico” program, which will be available at over 70 farmers markets in New Mexico. The innovative program is to help address the issue of food insecurity and to help increase access and affordability of locally grown fruits and vegetables to families across the state.
