Here’s a look at today’s news:

Members of the Gila Regional Medical Center Auxiliary were honored at a luncheon and awards ceremony held at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center. Chief Executive Officer, Taffy Arias, addressed the attendees and thanked them for their valuable service to the community. In addition, awards were presented to Pat Gaerttner and Eileen Smith for their 6500 hours of service, and to Past Auxiliary President, Frances Day, for “Auxilian of the Year.” The GRMC Auxiliary currently has 67 members.

The Village of Santa Clara Trustees have approved the hiring of a public safety aide who will assist police with non-emergency calls and other public safety issues. Maurilio Gardeno, was selected from a list of 3 applicants and will take on duties that include assisting with traffic and crowd control, and monitoring public buildings during the overnight hours. The trustees also approved a raise in monthly wastewater rates for residents and businesses, and is still considering to vote on an amendment to change the children’s curfew.

Luna County Sheriff’s Captain, Jose Martinez, has reported that a Luna County volunteer firefighter has been arrested on a charge of arson. Devven Leopold, a 20-year old volunteer with the Sunshine Volunteer Fire Department, was arrested in connection with the torching of a double-wide mobile home that resulted in over $20,000 worth of damage in the 4000 Block of McCan Road. It was further reported that no one was home at the time of the fire. The State Fire Marshall is involved with the case as the investigation continues forward.

The public is invited to the Grant County Prospectors Candidate Forum, tomorrow evening from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Western New Mexico University Global Resource Center auditorium, located at the corner of 12th and Kentucky Streets in Silver City. The Grant County Prospectors are a group of business leaders whose purpose is to educate policy makers and community members about the economic, community development and legislative needs in Grant County. The forum will feature candidates running for the following positions: Sixth Judicial District Judge; Grant County Commission; Sherriff; and state representative races. According to a release, questions have been prepared in advance and a monitor will facilitate the forum with no questions being taken from the floor. In addition, the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce and SkyWest Media are also serving as sponsors of the event.
