Here’s a look at today’s headlines:

The U.S Air Force is proposing to expand its special use airspace by adding a new military operations area, titled the “Lobos MOA”. The area, lying within 15 miles Northwest of Silver City, would assist in predicted future pilot training of the current F-16C/D aircraft at Holloman Airforce Base by providing needed airspace and an increase in operational capability.

The “New Mexico True Straight A Express” led by New Mexico Secretary of Education, Christopher Ruszkowski, came to visit Cobre and Silver School Districts last week as part of a state-wide tour recognizing schools that received a, “A” grade this year. In the Cobre District, San Lorenzo Elementary received an “A” grade for the 3rd year in a row, and in the Silver District, Jose Barrios Elementary earned an “A” grade for the 2nd year in a row.

The Volunteer Center of Grant County held its first Harvest Festival over the weekend to many enthusiastic attendees. Visitors were treated to fresh-pressed apple cider, mesquite pancakes, and fruit preserves made with locally harvested and gleaned fruit. The Volunteer Center also provided an area dedicated to a seed library that promotes residents to grow their own food and share seeds adapted to the local climate with others. In addition to the community event, Sam Schramski and Kristin Lundgren were introduced as the Volunteer Center’s Co-Executive Directors.

The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded the Mimbres Regional Arts Council with a grant to create four pop up arts centers in Grant County. These temporary “Casa De Artes” run two weeks and include an exhibition of art works, adult/teen workshops and a Saturday Arts camp for children with no fees charged. The goal of “Casa De Artes” program is to form local planning and advisory committees for each site. Community artists, art educators, school officials, town councilors, local business leaders, social workers and all interested adults and youth, are invited to participate in the processes.
