Recently, there have been sightings of a lone male mountain lion in the northern parts of Silver City, including Little Walnut Road heading east to Pinos Altos Road and from 19th Street to the city limits. Residents are asked to be observant and cautious in this area. Safety tips include, bringing in pets at night or placing them in a kennel and keeping the house perimeter well-lit , not leaving pet food outside, and closely supervising children whenever they are outdoors, particularly in early morning and evening hours.

Co-founder of Creative Startups Tom Aageson will speak at Western New Mexico University on Monday, Nov. 13th, at 6 p.m. in the Parotti Building next to the Fine Arts Center Theater. The first in a series of four Emerging Technologies and Creative Commerce lectures sponsored by PNM, Aageson’s “Creative Startups” presentation is meant to engage the community in crafting a creative economy. The lecture will be followed by interactive demos of University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning Plata Studio’s Mobile Makers Lab kiosks. Each module is specialized, so users can experience 3D printing, paper cutting for origami, animation and music composition.

The American Magnesium company of Elephant Butte is pursuing a Minimal Impact New Mine application to quarry foothills near the Mahoney Park area of the Florida Mountains, in Luna County. The application is for a proposed “dolomite” mine in addition to a proposed refinery that would be located in the north side of Deming containing an industrial park zone. The most common use for dolostone is in the construction industry. Various groups have voiced support and opposition to this proposal and the project and now all sides are waiting on a determination from the Bureau of Land Management.

The President of the United States has issued an official Proclamation as a mark of respect for the victims of the shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas on Sunday. The proclamation orders that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, November 9th.
