Here’s a look at today’s local headlines:

Fort Bayard Medical Center is assisting United Blood Services by hosting a community blood drive on Monday, November 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the medical center chapel. United Blood Services needs help replenishing their blood supply to continue to help those in need from Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma in Houston, Florida and Puerto Rico, Wildfires in the western U.S and the victims in Las Vegas. Donors can make their appointment online at unitedbloodservices.org.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, Inc., donated fresh meat to the Gospel Mission and El Refugio, Inc. domestic violence shelter. Freeport purchased two steers, two hogs and a lamb at the Grant County Fair Junior Livestock Auction this year. In addition to the donation of food to the Gospel Mission and El Refugio, the money used to purchase the meat benefited the students that raised the animals by funding their future education.

The Quemado Ranger District, Gila National Forest is coordinating with the Forest Engineer and road crew to remove the vault toilet at the rest area located on NM State Highway 32 between Apache Creek and Quemado. Rest areas along state highways have always been maintained by New Mexico Department of transportation, but this particular site has been closed for several years. In the interest of maintaining both public health and safety, and appropriate visual standards, the Quemado Ranger District has coordinated with NMDOT District 6 and will be removing the toilet. NMDOT will continue to provide trash removal services and a picnic stop at this area.

The Deming High School Robotics Team and Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Team, won the “Best of Game” at the annual New Mexico BEST Robotics competition at the New Mexico State campus in Las Cruces last month. The small robot, named “The Scorcher” is a 3 foot by 3 foot robot that provides various tasks in aiding assistance during an industrial fire emergency. The team has advanced to a December competition in Dallas, Texas.
