Here’s a look at today’s headlines:

The National Weather Service in El Paso has issued a Fire Weather Watch, which is in effect from Friday afternoon through Friday evening.  Southwest winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour with some gusts of 45 to 50 miles per hour are expected, with humidity as low as under 10%.  Isolated thunderstorms with some dry lightning are possible over the mountainous terrain.  Strong winds will result in fires spreading rapidly.  Outdoor burning is not recommended.  Affected areas include fire weather zones 110, 111, 112, 113, 055 and 056, including all of Grant, Luna and Hidalgo Counties.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation along with Hasse Construction will have a lane closure with flagging operations tomorrow, May 5th, on NM 377, mile post 1.9 near Deming.  NMDOT apologizes for any inconvenience this closure may cause.

In sports action, the Number 26 WNMU men’s golf team moved to within six-strokes of one of the five spots to advance to Nationals after the second round of the NCAA West/South Central Super Regional.  WNMU is tied for 12th and is within prime striking distance for the final round.  The final round was held this morning beginning at 7:30 am.

In honor of Bandelier National Monument’s 100th birthday, Los Alamos, New Mexico tourism partners are giving away annual passes to the monument every Monday through May 30, 2016 to visitors who share their stories, memories, and photos taken at Bandelier.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the launch of a new private investment fund with the potential to inject $100 million into small food and agriculture businesses across rural America. The fund, known as the Open Prairie Rural Opportunities Fund, will be the fourth Rural Business Investment Company (RBIC) that USDA has helped to create since 2014, and is part of USDA’s ongoing efforts to help attract private sector capital to investment opportunities in rural America to help drive more economic growth in rural communities.
