• Yesterday was a significant day of remembrance as it was Memorial Day. Special tributes were held all over the country. At Fort Bayard National cemetery more than 4000 small flags were placed on gravesites and on Monday morning, an event hosted by the American Legion Post 18, paid tribute to veterans and active military who have made possible the lives and freedoms we enjoy. Andrew Welch, administrator of the Albuquerque Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, was the key note speaker.

 

  • You may have noticed the sidewalk blocked off in front of the historic Buffalo bar location in downtown Silver City. The reason for the sidewalk closure is to address safety concerns of the Buffalo Bar sign and building front stability.   Owners, the Trujillo’s, were given a 10 day action notice by the city, which has now passed. An engineer was hired to examine the structural problems, whose recommendation involves a complete reconstruction plan to stabilize the area, wrapping the damaged brink in metal mesh.

 

  • The Blues and Bike festival was a huge success this past weekend. Headliner, Blues Hall of Fame member, Charlie Musselwhite showcased his music Saturday evening.

 

  • In Deming news, the Deming Elks Lodge recently made a donation of $1000 to the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association. The money will be used to help with the group’s third annual Vets Helping Vets Motorcycle Run on June 13th.

 

  • In other Deming news, the 36th Great American Duck Race plans are well underway. The theme for this year’s event is “Jungle Duck.” The date will be August 20-23.

 

  • Also, for Deming area, Deming High School has named its music director, Bernie Chavez, as the new Deming High School athletic and activities director.

 

  • Mark your calendars for the 7th Annual 2015 Jump into Summer event sponsored by HMS. Jump into Summer will be June 13th at Gough Park from 11am – 3pm.

 

  • On the Town of Silver City webpage, interested persons can follow the Hudson Street Bridge project as there is a link there to information concerning the project. The next Public Involvement meeting will be Wednesday, June 10th, from 6-7:30pm at the Grant County Convention Center.

 

  • Also, for interested persons, there is a Silver City Town Council meeting tonight at 6pm at the Grant County Administration Center.
