Here’s a look at some local news:

Hidalgo Medical Services (HMS) was awarded the Silver Quality Leader Award from Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) on August 19th, in recognition of ranking among the top 20% of health centers nationally for clinical quality. HMS’s Silver Quality Leader Award follows their recent, Advancing Health Information Technology for Quality Award from HRSA, which recognizes health centers that utilized five HIT services and/or telehealth services to increase access to care and advance quality. HMS is the only Federally Qualified Health Center in both Hidalgo and Grant counties, providing medical care to residents of Lordsburg, Animas, Silver City, Bayard, Hurley, Santa Clara, and all extended rural New Mexico areas in Hidalgo and Grant counties in 13 community clinics located throughout southwest New Mexico.

The Village of Santa Clara received funding from the National Park Service to renovate and improve the Fort Bayard Museum and Education Building. This week, as reported by the Grant County Beat, the New Mexico congressional delegation announced an award of $125,000 to help preserve the Fort Bayard National Historic Landmark. U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, along with U.S. Representatives Ben Ray Lújan and Xochitl Torres Small made the announcement that will fund projects that include: restoration to repair and replace gutters; prepare and paint building; replace and repair front and back porches and address foundation issues.

City of Bayard, Mayor Chon Fierro, presented the Copper All-Stars girls with a special recognition during the regular city council meeting on Monday. The athletes were honored for their outstanding season with a signed proclamation to the team and their manager, Robert Esqueda. The Copper All-Stars won the District 7 and New Mexico State Tournament.

The Luna County Road Department will be spraying mesquites for road maintenance of easement on Sunshine Road, Monte Vista Road and Marana Road beginning the end of August through the end of September.  This is being done for road work that will commence next year. The spray will only treat any mesquites and grass that it comes in contact with.
