Here’s a look at today’s headlines:

 

The Deming Literacy Center recently honored local tutors who have served in the program for 20-plus years. Special awards were presented by Mayor Benny Jasso and State Representative Candie Sweetser, to recipients, Miguel Briceno, Marisol Perez, Roxana Rincon and Lois Tharp. The Deming Literacy Program has been active since 1990 and offers free classes in English/Spanish as a Second Language, preparation for GED and US Citizenship, and computer instruction. All sessions are taught by volunteer tutors who attend an 18 hour training program through the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. In addition, Literacy Link Leamos, which has an office in the Silver City Public Library, has been awarded the Literacy Program of the Year from the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. Connie Jimenez, a Literacy Link Leamos student, has also been awarded Literacy Student of the Year by the Coalition. The awards will be presented on September 8, during the Coalition’s annual conference.

A popular resident and owner of Lalo’s Copper Clipper in Bayard, Eulalio “Lalo” Martinez Rodriguez, sustained fatal injuries in a motorcycle accident last Saturday afternoon, outside of Hillsboro on State Road 27 near mile marker 10.  Rodriguez was a 1999 graduate of Cobre High School and continued studies at WNMU before attending barber school in Las Cruces. Lalo was well known in the community and an avid supporter of youth sports and other activities. Sincere condolences are given to his family during this time.

A New Mexico History Museum photo exhibition, titled “Lowriders, Hoppers and Hot Rods” will be featured along with other events at Western New Mexico University.  A opening reception will take place on Thursday, September 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Frances McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art.

The Silver City Town Council met this Tuesday and worked in several items. The council approved a transfer of ownership and name change of a liquor license from Albuquerque to Mel-Mike Enterprises, DBA Jalisco Café, to serve hard liquor in addition to beer and wine. The council also approved a Colonias Infrastructure Project Grant/Loan Agreement for $177,137 for street improvement designs for Ridge Road and a Capital Improvement Plan for the Silver City Senior Center. In addition, Mayor Ken Ladner, and District 4 Councilor, Guadalupe Cano, congratulated District 1 Councilor, Cynthia Bettison, for being elected vice president of the New Mexico Municipal league.
