The Grant County Rolling Stones Gem and Mineral Society will hold their 34th Annual Gem & Mineral Show Labor Day weekend, September 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.  This year, the event will return to the newly remodeled Grant County Veterans’ Memorial Conference Center located at 3031 Highway 180 East, in Silver City. There will be large assortment of vendors, Wheel of Fortune, Silent Auction, and Daily Field trips, in addition to educational displays from New Mexico State University and the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Admission is free. Hours of the event are as follows: Saturday September 2nd from 9 am to 5 pm; Sunday September 3rd 10 am to 5 pm and Monday September 4th from 10 am to 4 pm. On Tuesday, September 5th, a Travel Show titled “Travels with Darley” will be filming in downtown Silver City. Widely recognized for her ability to bring out the best in her on-camera guests, TV host, producer, author, and entrepreneur, Darley Newman, travels the globe for Emmy-Award winning TV and digital series through her production company DCN Creative. She is the host, producer and creator of “Equitrekking”, which broadcasts on PBS and networks in over 85 countries, and “Travels with Darley”, which launched on PBS stations in early 2016. Former Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy, Michael C. Aguirre, recently appeared in District County Court with his attorney, Jim Foy, regarding a hearing on a second amended motion to discuss Aguirre’s release into treatment. It was suggested that Aguirre enter a 28-day treatment program for mental health and substance abuse issues at Mesilla Valley Hospital, followed by a four to five-week halfway program, then finally into an outpatient treatment program. After further discussion and some questions presented by District County Judge, J.C. Robinson, it was agreed that an order be prepared by today with specific conditions regarding treatment, including progress reports. The order must be signed by all custodians and will not be approved unless it is signed off by the victim. Aguirre has been charged with 13 counts of mostly violent crimes in two separate incidents occurring in May of this year.

On August 21st, several Grant County 4H members were recognized by the Grant County Soil and Water Conservation District for their success at this year’s Land Judging Competition at the New Mexico State 4-H Conference. The Land Judging competition is comprised of assessing information regarding field conditions which include deficiencies in soil, manure availability, thickness or original topsoil, size of field, and availability of irrigation water. The individual winners were Kolby Taylor in 1st place with a $75 prize, Justin Billings in 2nd place with a $50 prize, and 4th place being awarded to Trent Kasten. All three members also won 1st place in the team competition were awarded a $150.00 prize. Justin Billings was also given a $75 prize for being high point individual in the range management contest. The team presented the Grant County Soil and Water Conservation District with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of 4-H for all the support they have received.
