U.S. Border Patrol Agents tracked and apprehended four subjects making an illegal crossing from Mexico while carrying large square backpacks. Agents along with a K-9 partner and members of the Lordsburg Horse Patrol Unit were deployed and followed footprints for 6 miles heading in a northwest direction across the New Mexico/Arizona state line. The suspected smugglers were carrying three large burlap wrapped bundles of marijuana weighing a total of 142 pounds and valued at $133,600. The contraband and four subjects were turned over to the Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents for prosecution.
Several people were affected by a swarm of bees at the Silver City Dog Park located on the 1200 Block of North Virginia Street at last weekend. One individual in particular was treated for multiple stings and transported to Gila Regional Medical Center. The hive was located at a home on West Street where the owner keeps bees.
Silver Consolidated Schools have begun the 2018-19 school year this week with Cliff schools starting on Tuesday, Silver Pre-K through 9th grade returning yesterday, and 10th grade through 12th heading back today. New employees have joined the District that include teachers, coaches, administrators, secretaries, and school nurses. Claudia Smith, of Deming has replaced Clifford Thompson as Silver High’s assistant principal, and in addition, Thompson has moved on to Cliff as their new principal replacing Dean Spurgeon. Curtis Clough joined the district in June, serving as the new Associate School Superintendent replacing Candy Milam, who retired in April. Opportunity High School students have been relocated to the Silver High School campus and the former OHS building is now housing Pre-K students.
Deming’s 2nd Annual National Night Out event offered many activities and fun options for families at Luna County Courthouse Park this past Tuesday evening. In addition to free hamburgers and hotdogs, the public was treated to games and prizes, a Desert Classics Car Club display, DJ music and dancing, landing of the Native Air helicopter, and decorated tables from local schools sharing information just before the start of the new school year.
