Events happening the week of April 22nd to April 28th

General Events

  • The City of Lordsburg will be having a “Survivor Luminaria Lighting” event on April 22nd In observance of “National Crime Victims’ Week”. This event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lordsburg Memorial Park.  

 

  • Parents As Teachers will be having a “Safety Car Seat Check” on April 24th in Lordsburg so parents can have the opportunity to have their child’s car seat checked for any recalls, broken parts and improper installation. The car seat check will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 207 High Street in Lordsburg and is free and open to the public.

The car seat check will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 1510 South Slate Street in Deming and is free and open to the public. 

 

  • Luna County will be having their Luna County Citizen’s College Meeting on April 25th to discuss “Next Generation 911”, which is aimed to improve public emergency communications in Luna County. The meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Luna County Courthouse. 

 

  • TheActrix Studio LLC will be presenting a Theatrical Production Adaptation of Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein” on April 26th-28th. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the performance beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the WNMU Fine Arts Center in Silver City.   • The City of Deming will be having “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day” on April 27th where they will be taking unused or expired medications. This event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Deming Senior Center. 

 

Youth Events

  • Marshall Memorial Library will be having activities for children with Special Needs on April 23rd from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. These activities will take place at 110 South Diamond Avenue in Deming.

 

  • The Silver City Public Library will be having “Game Day” on April 23rd from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Come pick from an assortment of games or bring your own. Children of all ages are welcome. 

 

  • HELP New Mexico and CASA of Luna County will be having a “Day of the Young Child” on April 26th with food, music, activities, raffles and more. This event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Luna County Courthouse. Children of all ages are welcome. 

 

  • Come explore LEGO on April 27th at the Silver City Public Library. Children wanting to learn more about what you can create with LEGO are invited to attend. For more information, call 575-538-3672.

 

  • The Lordsburg-Hidalgo Library will be having a “Tea Party” on April 26th. They will have tea, snacks, crafts and much more. The tea party will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and children of all ages are welcome.

Ongoing Events and Services In The Silver City Area

General Events

  • Amber care Hospice and the Silver City Women’s Club will be starting a “Bereavement Support Group” to help individuals deal with the different stages of grief that come with the passing of a family member or close friend. The goal of the group is to help provide a safe environment that participants can turn to for hope and healing in a sensitive manner. The group meets the second Monday of each month, starting March 11th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Silver City Women’s Club and is free and open to the public. 

 

  • Literacy Link-Leamos is back in operation and located in the Silver City Public Library. They are currently recruiting volunteer tutors to help with Basic Adult Literacy, Basic Math, HiSET/GED Exam Prep, English (ESL), and Citizenship Exam Prep. For more information, call 575-388-0892.

 

  • Silver Regional Sexual Assault Support Services  are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. They offer free and confidential services like legal accompaniment, counseling, crisis intervention, public education and outreach and so much more. For more information call 575-313-6203.

 

  • The Commons Center for Food Security and Sustainability has Folk Music and a Potluck every 3rd Sunday of the month dinner for the entire family. Bring your instruments and some songs and a food dish to share. Music is from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and food is from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

 

  • The Saint Vincent De Paul Church utility assistance to Grant County residents in need. They are located at 420 West Market Street in Building C in Downtown Silver City. For more information on days and times, call the office at 575-538-9373.

 

Ongoing Youth Events & Services

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters program seeks to create mentoring relationships  and support youth throughout Grant County. Their unique one-to-one mentoring helps children achieve success in school, avoid risky behaviors and improves their self-confidence.   • Earth Ways Outdoors, is offering “Walkabout” for children 8 to 13 years old through the month of May in Grant County who are interested in exploring the outdoors. Walkabout is a program that provides children the opportunity to get to know the local creeks, hillsides and forests in the area through group nature exploration, awareness games, guided nature observation and more. Cliff/Gila kids meet every 4th Friday of the month, Bayard kids meet every 2nd Friday of the month and the Teen Group meets every 4th Saturday of the month.   • Kiwanis Club of Silver City is a service organization dedicated to serving children, one child at a time, in one community at a time. Kiwanis Club of Silver City presently offers in our area Terrific Kids in 10 elementary schools, Student of the Month in 10 schools, K-Kids in 1 elementary school, Builders Club in 2 middle schools, Key Clubs is 3 high schools, CKI at WNMU, and Aktion Club for adults living with disabilities.   • Southwest Adolescent Group (SWAG) seeks to enrich the lives of adolescents in the Grant County area. SWAG creates and implements safe, community-based programs. These programs are available for teens between the ages of 13-17 years old. For more information, stop by 875 Silver Heights Blvd. 

 

  • The Commons offers a variety of programs to Silver City youth. They provide internships, paid work related training and summer enrichment programs. To find out more about these programs, contact The Commons at 575-388-2988.

 

Veterans Events

  • Disabled American Veterans (DAV) meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 10a.m. The meetings take place at the VFW building in Arenas Valley. All disabled veterans welcomed! For more information, call 575-313-5594.

 

  • Silver City Veteran Clinic provides primary care and specialty health services to veterans in need. Some of the services provided are dermatology, social work, behavioral health, COVID vaccines and more. For more information, call 575-538-2921.

 

  • The Silver City Veteran Service Center Office assists Veterans and their dependents with preparing claims for benefits that they may be entitled to. The office is located at 409 West College and open to all veterans. For more information call 575-538-2377.

 

  • The Rural Veterans Transportation Program provides medical transportation to veterans in Grant County. The program provides free round-trip rides to veterans to and from their home and any U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or VA-approved medical appointment. Veterans interested in using this service must make reservations for these free round trip rides at least 3 days in advance of a medical appointment.   •  Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 12212 is a new Post in Grant County that holds meetings every 3rd Saturday of the month at 11:00 A.M. at the Santa Clara Armory.
